Dear All,
Sometimes, we seem to run out of imagination and wonder what can we do, or write about....? If this is your case and if you really want to make a difference, here is one of the things you can do, for you and me and for the world cultural heritage: write about diversity, in all its forms, cultural, linguistics, political, environmental, geographic, flora, fauna, whatever you want, but help me to promote diversity, respect our differences, and educate the next for the need to learn and understand that diversity is our greatest fortune in this planet!
To start with and to celebrate diversity all over the world, I would like to request all of you to go outside with your cameras and picture DIVERSITY, wherever you are, whatever you find it in you city, in your country, at school, ads in the newspapers searching for foreigners, people that speak different languages, typical food, a Chinese restaurant in Slovenia or Latvia, a German bakery in Brazil, a Brazilian restaurant in Holland, refugees in Austria, etc.
For a change, you could also watch another country's TV channels, listen to world music, try a different outfit...it might be fun and even cool as my son would say it...You can also visit a museum, photograph an specific building, with foreign characteristics or inspiration.
Please send the pictures to my email vandecraatsuk@gmail.com and I will make a nice video-clip or slide for the EJC community. I also would like to ask you all to write an article about Diversity and what do you think of it, so we can publish the articles here in our MEDIA MUNDO, Tourism and Journalism, etc.
Above all, say hello to a foreigner, show interest for their cultures, cook a different receipe today. Just to help you out and give you some ideas about DIVERSITY have a look at these UNESCO videos:

For more in depth information on the theme of DIVERSITY, please read this document : http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0018/001852/185202e.pdf
Have a wonderful day and keep me updated of your results and interesting links you may find and don't forget to send me your original pictures as well. I will post all of them in our websites, but also here at the EJC.
Thanks in advance,
Eliana
P.S.:This is a permanent project. Feel free to send your pictures to this email address: sij.journal@gmail.com to the attention of Eliana

Thank you for sharing the ideas on culutral diversities with all of us. Will try to look at what I can do to assist on this matter.
Yeah I agree it is high time each of us should find a way on how to bring the community together especially from your side of the globe and Asia through culture.
Have a great evenng

Permalink Reply by Eliana van de Craats Lima on May 21, 2012 at 14:01 Dear Tengku,
Great hearing from you. Yes, if I could I would spent my days talking to people from other cultures, sharing our views of the world and above all getting to know the beauty of our world heritage. I treasure your message and if possible I would be pleased if you could print and place the diversity article in public place or schools, so they can join us!
Whatever you do, even if it is to interview your neighbours about their views on diversity, or a simple picture of a wild Malaysian flower, would be wonderful!
I'm looking forward to hearing from you,
Thanks again for your nice comments, it gives me inspiration and I hope others will join us!

Again, I want to share another video on diversity, this time, a very controversial video from a Dutch company, a kind of disgusting commercial, which might offend not only Ukrainian, Dutch women but all of us. Please send me your views and engage students to give their feedback on it if possible. I didn't like the commercial at all and I am sorry for such a bad taste.
However, it requires a reaction from all of us:

Waiting for your comments,
Kindest regards,

Permalink Reply by Eliana van de Craats Lima on May 21, 2012 at 22:14 I really think that we have too many stereotypes about other people. It is interesting to realize that we loose amazing and great opportunities to have a relationship with somebody, with a company or with another country just because of prejudices and ignorance about the other.
I remember that once I had classes at the faculty of administration and it was very unnusual. Instead of learning maths, IT or statistics, one day, we came in and there was a Chinese lady teaching us Tai Chi Ch'uan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T'ai_chi_ch'uan. We had to move around, almost dancing, and staring at each other...following the 13 steps of the martial art, but in the end, we had the impression we got to know each other in such a way that I will never forget the people there on that day and I never forgot how shocking it was to find out, that in order to be a good manager we have to be able to look each other in the eyes. Well, I was only 19 years old and very shy, so I always avoided staring at people.
Since this unique T'ai chi ch'an classes, I've lost my fear to face people and to tell them what I think or feel. Learning to know the other, helps us to learn ourselves!
Good night and keep on making eye contact, show your partners, or adversaries that you are aware of them (in a good way). In Journalism or in any other business, we need to be able to welcome the people we meet, make them feel confortable, but at the same time, establishing our boundaries, with sense and sensibility!
If all you learn is a lot of forms, you just become a good dancer. (James Wing Woo). You can find more on this martial art reading Jess O'Brien (2007).
Permalink Reply by Eliana van de Craats Lima on May 22, 2012 at 10:29 Good Morning Everyone,
Please remember, diversity is part of our lives, and our diversity project will run until the 21th of June.
Take your time, but continue uploading your videos, pictures and texts or leaving your comments here. Let the world know which are the diversity issues relevant for you at the moment: ecology, demographic, political, geographic, religious, gender, education, language, Media, business, human resource practices, the sky is the limit. Diversity is everywhere. We are all looking forward to get to know each other and remember what I said yesterda about eye contact...perhaps you could send a picture of your eyes staring at the camera, then we know you care and we will even find out which are the shapes of your eyes.....
Permalink Reply by Eliana van de Craats Lima on May 22, 2012 at 13:26 In the month of International Diversity, I welcome all new members and wish we will interact even more with people from different backgrounds. Introduce yourself and your country, invite a friend to join us and share our ideas!
Your interaction will be highly appreciated,
Eliana
