Hi Emma and others,

Well, my name is afnan khan and I am currently working as chief reporter with Daily Times newspaper in Pakistan.

I started my career as a  reporter from a paper called Daily Insaf in 2001. Then I joined daily The Sun, Daily Times and The News as staff correspondent before joining Daily Times as Chief Reporter in 2008.

I chose to report the issues mostly neglected by the media like misuse of notorious blasphemy laws and hudood ordinance, which served as tools to suppress women and minorities. I also filed investigative pieces about vandalizing of ancient temples and non-Muslim’s religious places, increase in cases of child abuse and lack of educational facilities in public schools, which were strengthening the seminaries and extremism reciprocally.

My articles published in The News and Daily Times not only gave a voice to deprived sections of society but also revealed growing fundamentalism in Pakistan. I am also working with the international media outlets like The Guardian and All India Radio as a contributer and frequently appear in live shows on TV channels.

I have faced multiple threats from the terrorists for my investigative piece on the state of human rights in the country and how extremism was subverting the society. Me and my colleagues are feeling very angry and blue now a days because the extremists have assassinated Salmaan Taseer, the publisher of Daily Times for his bold stand over these issues.

This is my introduction and i hope i was able to explain a little bit about my background and what i do.

Best,

Afnan
