Zambia has just launched its Sixth National Development Plan.
this respective plan succeeds the Fifth National Development Plan, which expired last year.
all these are five-years long medium term plans, which the government hopes will drive the country into the middle income brackets by the year 2030.
the SNDP as it is commonly known has at least 131 trillion kwacha, about 26 billion U.S dollars, tied to it for various development projects. quite ambitious, i should say, but very achievable if only government can reduce on its expensive budget for the republican president, who has travelled to almost every corner of this world on the pretext of attracting global investment into Zambia.
the preceding plan, the FNDP, did not bear so much fruits considering the global economic crisis as well as the failing government will to forgo some of the executive arm of government's huge expenses.
this year is also another tricky one becauseof the general elections soon to be held.
obviously such a year comes with it alot of speculations to do with whether, any change in government will come with political-influenced changes in economic policies, at the same time, like the usualtrend in africa of those in power to fill up their pockets with public money as they are unsure whether they willcontinue in government.
any now the SNDP has been launched, the people will just keep their fingers crossed hoping the contents of the respective development plan will be fulfilled.
