Journalism is, as most everybody knows, evolving.

Existing editors working (struggling?) to get to grips with the web need to understand what new technology can do.

Out of interest, how many editors, and aspiring editors, know what the following are, and what they can do:

PHP
MySql
ASP
Javascript
Java
CSS
xHTML
CDN
keywords
PR (not Public Relations!)
GA
Bounce rate

You can vote in this poll too: http://poll.fm/2bojv (and keep your name secret)

If you don't know what the things above are and what they can do, then it may be worth your while learning a bit about them and then thinking how you can use them to improve your web presence, please advertisers, and increase 'circulation'.

One final thing, a question: What can news sites learn from the likes of online shopping services such as Amazon? Focus on Amazon to start.

Let's see what you know.

Interesting query Alex... these skills are pretty hard to learn though right? I've only dipped my tow to CSS/xHTML and it takes time that I can imagine a lot of people don't have.
You don't need to learn the skills - that can take years! But, you can develop a little knowledge of what they can do, so you can learn how you can use them to make a web site work better.

Remember - Wikipedia is your friend!

If there is enough interest, I'll write a little about each of them. I know most of them, some better than others, but I'm not an expert on any of them. However, if I wanted someone to add some functionality to my site, I would know whether something is possible, and know who to speak to about it.

Familiarity is the key, I feel, not in-depth knowledge.

PS Have added another little question.
P.S. I used your list for a poll - check it out at the bottom of the EJC homepage or here: http://poll.fm/2bojv

Thanks for the inspiration!

Great! Glad I was inspiring! Was being here which inspired the discussion topic ;)

One weeny tiny comment - the poll is public, so you might get people who are not editors etc voting - this might affect its accuracy.

Still, it is a good idea. Will be interesting to see the results too.

Best,

Alex
Well, we'll see hey! I guess, who is an editor/journalist nowadays...?
Well, we can all be journalists/editors nowadays, but not all of us run the websites of major national newspapers and news magazines - these are the people I'd like to see this...before it is too late!
Java is a programming language originally developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems.

JavaScript is an object-oriented scripting language used to enable programmatic access to objects within both the client application and other applications.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation semantics (that is, the look and formatting) of a document written in a markup language.

XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) is a family of XML markup languages that mirror or extend versions of the widely used Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the language in which web pages are written.

It is easy to find in Wikipedia what these terms mean. It is more difficult to use them. They are usefull for programmers.

Next one is for journalists, it`s easy to use by everybody and it is very usefull if a journalist write for a website.

Keywords are the words that are used to reveal the internal structure of an author's reasoning. While they are used primarily for rhetoric, they are also used in a strictly grammatical sense for structural composition, reasoning, and comprehension. Indeed, they are an essential part of any language.
Bad editor! You cheated, but thanks for replying.

I wanted to see what people knew without them going to Wikipedia first!

Still, at least I got you reading about them - which is a positive result.

And you seem to know what keywords are all about, but do you know which systems you can use to find out which keywords (and sentence chunks) are the flavour of the moment on the www?

Time for more reading, Emil!

Best,

Alex
I read about them and knew about them for years. First 4 are usefull for programers, and I do not use them. Last one I not only knew, but use in my work. I copy definition from Wikipedia, because it`s easier.
Great to hear you know about them. Programmers can make sites work better and if editors know what programmers can do, they can do interesting things with their web sites - like Amazon.

Good to hear you know about, and use, keywords. Very important if you don't have a well known brand behind you like Time or the NYT.
Really I have a good brand behind me - Bulgarian National Radio, but nevertheless it`s usefull to use keewords.
This is link to our site: http://www.bnr.bg/Pages/default.aspx
This is link to our site on english (It`s for foreigners and it`s different from bulgarian one.):

Bulgarian National Radio is a good brand to have, that is true, Emil.

Actually, radio is, as far as I can tell, something which has not suffered too badly as a result of the www revolution - and radio can be broadcast via the www too.

Very good to see you have a multi-lingual site too - you won't find many such sites in Italy.

I also note that you use paragraphs in Bulgarian (not that I know Bulgarian). Good for readability - again, something a few of Italy's major news sites have yet to bother with. Italian paragraphs are long and dense - but there is, I am told, a cultural reason for this - long paragraphs are taken more seriously. Short paragraphs indicate gossip to some readers.

Sign Language in Media, Communication & Journalism

If in Journalism, Media and Communication in general, one deals with freedom of expression, one has to be accessible to all and able to understand and communicate in all languages. Sign language is one of them and it is not only the language of the hearing impaired, it is a minority language of many people in every society of the world. It is also an important way to communicate in some of our world's societies as part of their culture.Although it is very important and for many people the only…See More
