When short sellers fund journalists

Cary Spivak and the AJR have gone way too far with their 3,200-word thumbsucker on the ethics of funding investigative journalism with the proceeds from short-selling.

Qamar you are absolutely right. Anything that can help peace is a welcomed move. Let's make an effort to work along these lines. Also as you say to save lives.

Investigative journalism is like adventurous but should be within ethical boundrie. short selling should not be the only motive. I am new in this feild so looking for tips and guidance.

Perhaps in this changing era of journalism, people may be taking advantage of the blurring/lack of clarity regarding the future of journalism, to cloak inappropriate ideas and concepts in its guise.

Investigative journalism is also about ethics not only short selling.
I agree that short selling might be one of the driving forces but it is certainly not the only one. Otherwise I should agree with Felix Salmon who says that the majority of journalism is done for private gain. But I refuse to do so since I believe that journalism is not only that. And I would not call journalists those that are driven only by the short selling bug.
I believe that those who act in this way are NOT journalists even if they call themselves so. Journalism is communicating to other people informing them of what is happening elsewhere and showing them how other live. What do you communicate if you only aim at making profit or think of your private gain exclusively?
This is not the idea of journalism that I have had all my life. Have i been wrong all this time, then?

Felix Salmon added some interesting debate to the ethics of funding investigative journalism in seekingalpha.com yesterday.

His article was a direct response to criticism by writer Cary Spivak in American Journalism Review, of two web sites that investigate business fraud which are funded by short selling - i.e. placing market bets that the stock of companies they write about will go down.

Salmon says of this unconventional journalism business model:

"Personally, I’m all in favor of experimenting with new journalistic business models, including non-profits like ProPublica. But the fact is that the overwhelming majority of journalism is done for profit and for private gain. If seeking to make money off journalism disqualifies it as journalism, then journalism barely exists."

"Investigative journalism has always been about exposing and profiting — it’s just that the profit has historically come from newsstand sales or increased ad revenue rather than from short sellers."

Any thoughts?
