The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), one of the most visited museums in the United States, seeks a writer for its expanding development team. The Museum has embarked on the quiet phase of a $230 million campaign, which is part of an overall Smithsonian Comprehensive Campaign.
Reporting to the Museum’s Director of Strategic Communications, the writer will draft proposals, fundraising publications, and communication materials for individuals, foundations and corporations; interview selected program staff to develop and draft compelling story lines about their work; and draft selected copy for the Museum’s website. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in writing for a variety of audiences (donors, the public, media) and platforms, and in a variety of writing styles; ability to draft materials on a wide range of topics; ability to translate complex scientific and technical ideas into language easily comprehensible to non-specialists; ability to understand and synthesize perspectives from diverse stakeholders; and ideally experience in writing for both fundraising and non-fundraising purposes.
