Herat, Afghanistan, (26 JUL 2012) – The combined operation (Afghan
security forces and ISAF soldiers) called "SHRIMPS NET" has ended in
Farah province, in the south of the area of responsibility of Regional
Command West (RC-West), led by “Bersaglieri” Brigade "GARIBALDI".

The operation, which lasted over a month, has seen engaged on the
field, the Afghan National Security Forces (ANFS) assisted by ISAF
forces, with a total of about 3000 men.

The purpose of SHRIMPS NET was to disrupt the insurgent’s network, to
take full control of the District of Gulistan and move ISAF forces in
key districts of Farah province.

During the operation, 67 IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device) and
ammunition caches have been discovered and destroyed by Afghan,
Italian and US teams.

The insurgents have repeatedly tried to hamper the activities, but
they were always drawn back after suffering considerable losses. In
addition, seven of them were arrested by the Afghan police. The
district of Gulistan is back in the hands of the Afghans.

The operation SHRIMPS NET was the latest demonstration of skills
acquired by local security forces to plan and conduct complex
operations on the ground.

The local community has welcomed their soldiers and policemen, from
this moment responsible for their safety in Gulistan.
