- Emre Kizilkaya, 29, is a journalist based in Istanbul. His blog, The Istanbulian, is the first English-language blog of a Turkish journalist who works for a major newspaper in Turkey.
Kizilkaya has got a B.A degree on Political Science and International Relations at Istanbul University and an M.A degree on Journalism at Marmara University, which is also based in Istanbul, Turkey. His dissertation was titled “Ideological Discourse and Narrative in Computer Games.”
Currently, Kizilkaya works for Hurriyet, the biggest newspaper in Turkey, as the Chief Editor of the Foreign News Service. Among numerous foreign politicians that he has interviewed include Israel President Moshe Katsav, Finnish President Tarja Halonen, Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy and Olli Rehn, the European Commissioner for Enlargement.
Since 2003, he has also worked for various magazines, including Hurriyet Tarih, a weekly Turkish magazine on popular history. He is the Turkish translator of Angels and Jesus’ Son, two books by Denis Johnson, the American novelist.
He speaks Turkish, English, German and Russian. He likes to play basketball and chess, to read Ottoman literature and to write stories. His hobbies include miniature modelling and strategy gaming.
