Russian media start marking news content for children's sake

Even though I rarely contribute direct to my news agency's newswire, I do routinely check the general Russian wire for hundreds of news headlines and read at least couple dozen or so stories a day. Social media exchange notwithstanding, of course.

UNESCO boss condemns murder of Afghan Journalist

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) head  has condemned the murder of an Afghan journalist and called for those responsible for his death to be brought to justice.



Ahmad Omed Khpalwak, 25, was a freelance reporter for the Pashto service of the BBC and the Afghan news agency Pajhwok. He was among 19 people killed in a Taliban attack on 24 July in Tarin Khot, capital of the southern province of Uruzgan, which also left dozens of others… Continue

Ethopian Editor finally released on bail

An editor with state-owned Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency (ERTA) Haileyesus Worku,, and one of his reporters, Abdulsemed Mohammed, were last week  finally released on bail of 5,000 birr (205 euros) after being held for 15 months on charges of illegally selling state-owned news content for personal gain.

Sudan fines another woman journalist for reporting rape allegations.

Sudanese journalist Amal Habani, a woman reporter for the daily Al-Jarida has been fined  2,000 pounds (600 euros) or a month in jail for reporting a woman activist’s claims that she was raped by members of the security forces.

As Habani refused to pay the fine, she was immediately taken to Omdurman women’s prison, northwest of the capital, to begin serving the jail sentence. Habani was convicted by Judge Modather Al-Rasheed of the Khartoum media court, who fined her editor, Saadeldin…
