Charges referred to general courts martial for Sgt. Travis Carden

KANDAHAR AIR FIELD, Afghanistan - The Regional Command-South commander referred charges for Sgt. Travis Carden to general court-martial this past week. Sgt. Carden is charged in connection with the October 3, 2011 death of Pvt. Danny Chen, an infantryman assigned to C Co., 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Combat Outpost Palace. Chen was found in a guard tower with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Carden is currently charged with two specifications of Article 92, UCMJ, violation of a lawful general regulation, two specifications of Article 93, UCMJ, maltreatment, one specification of Article 128, UCMJ, assault, and one specification of Article 134, UCMJ, reckless endangerment. The next step in the process will be an arraignment, which will be scheduled in the coming days. The court-martial is set for April 4-5, 2012 on Kandahar Air Field. Carden, a 25-year old native of Fowler, Ind. is an infantryman assigned to C Co. He is one of eight Soldiers who are facing charges in connection with Chen's death.
