Commission formed to help strengthen Grameen Bank's operation

DHAKA, May 16: The government today formed a four- member commission to review Grameen Bank's operation and recommend measures to strengthen further its activities ensuring borrowers the best benefit of the country's largest microfinance institution.

Former secretary Mamunur Rashid has been made president of the commission, Director General of National Academy for Planning and Development (NAPD) Dr MA Kamal member secretary and Barrister Ajmalul Hossain and Mosleh Uddin Ahmed two members.

Bank and Financial Institution Division of the Finance Ministry constituted the commission under the 'Commission of Inquiry Act 1956'.

The commission will submit a report with recommendations to the government within three months after reviewing the operation of Grameen Bank and its 34 subsidiaries.

The Grameen Bank authority has been advised to provide necessary cooperation to the commission including offering office space, manpower and transport to help carry out its duty.
