DHAKA, May 30: Two days after assaulting three journalists of a Bengali daily, police on Tuesday beat up three more journalists at a Dhaka court premises.
They beat up Prothom Alo's Proshanto Karmaker, Kaler Kantha's MA Jalil Ujjal and Bangladesh Protidin's Tuhin Hawlader in the afternoon at the entrance of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, lawyers who witnessed the incident said.
They said the journalists, all court correspondents, were assaulted in presence of Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Salahuddin Khan.
Two lawyers were also beaten up in the same incident. Police dragged them into the police van and took them to the Kotwali Police Station, said Tuhin Hawlader, one of the injured.
On Saturday, police assaulted and injured three photojournalists of Prothom Alo – Khaled Sarker, Sajid Hossain and Jahidul Karim – at the capital's Agargaon.
Miscreants stabbed two journalists and an office assistant of bdnews24.com and injured several others storming into their office building at Mohakhali on Monday night.
Journalists said the policemen swept on the three correspondents on the court premises on Tuesday when they went there to gather news.
Tuhin Hawlader told reporters that on information that a young woman who had come to the court to lodge a case over dowry was assaulted by the policemen at the court premises, the journalists rushed there to have statements from the law enforcers.
OC Salahuddin misbehaved with Channel i Correspondent Parag Azim.
Omar Faruk, one of the lawyers who witnessed the incident, said that the woman came to the court along with his father on motorcycle. "Police stopped them at the court entrance from entering into the premises with motorcycle."
"At one stage of a heated verbal exchange, the policemen dragged her to the Police Club in the court premises," he added.
Asked about the misdemeanour with Channel i Correspondent Parag, the policemen attacked the three journalists. Journalist alleged that Sub-Inspectors Zaman and Jahangir launched the attack on instigation by OC Salahuddin.
Tuhin said they obstructed the policemen when they started beating up Proshanto Karmaker. "Then they also assaulted us. As the lawyers present there intervened, the unruly policemen picked up them in the van after giving them a good beating."
The lawyers were identified as 'Raju' and 'Shakib'.
After the on-duty court correspondents filed a complaint with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Bikash Kumar Saha, he summoned the OC and other policemen to explain the incident on Wednesday.
