SYLHET, May 11: At least seven persons, including senior vice-president of Sylhet District Awami League Iftekhar Hossain Shamim, were killed and 20 others injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Osmani Nagar upazila this morning.

Al-Amin, officer-in-charge of Osmaninagar Police Station said the accident occurred at around 6.00 am at Dayamir area when a Sylhet bound bus of 'Greenline Paribahan' collided head-on with a stone-laden truck coming from opposite direction killing seven persons on the spot.
The injured, including Shamim's wife, were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Of the dead four others were identified as Baten, 45, Abir,20, Opu,24, Rajasha,28. All of them were from Dhaka. The bodies were sent to Osmani Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
The namaj-e-janaza of Shamim, also a valiant freedom fighter and former General secretary of Sylhet district Awami league, will be held at Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa ground after Asar prayer today.
Later, he will be buried at Hazarat Shah Jalal Dargha graveyard.
In a condolence message, Finance Minister AMA Muhith expressed his deep shock at the death of Shamim and others and conveyed his sympathy to the members of the bereaved families.
He also prayed for the peace of the departed souls.
