Peshawar, World Refugee Day was marked Wednesday June 20, 2012 in a series of events across Pakistan involving the UN Refugee Agency and its partners.
One in every four refugees in the world is from Afghanistan, while Pakistan currently gives refuge to the most number of refugees, as well as individuals from various other countries who have sought asylum. UNHCR has assisted more than 3.7 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan to return home since 2002 in the world largest voluntary repatriation.
In Peshawar, the day’s main event was held at the University of Peshawar’s PUTA Hall. The chief guest was Mr. Syed Alamgir Shah, Special Secretary of Home and Tribal Affairs in Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa, and Mr. Ahmad Warsami, Head of UNHCR Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa. Mostly students, teachers and IDPs attended the event.
